Others who survived it thought it should never have been. Not only did this affect the people who lived through it, it also affected everyone who was connected to those fortunate individuals who survived. The survivors were lucky to have made it but there are times when their memories and flashbacks have made them wish they were the ones who died instead of living with the horrible aftermath. The psychological effects of the Holocaust on people from different parts such as survivors of Israel and survivors of the ghettos and camps vary in some ways yet in others are profoundly similar. The vast number of prisoners of various nationalities and religions in the camps made such differences inevitable. Many contrasting opinions have been published about the victims and survivors of the holocaust based on the writers' different cultural backrounds, personal experiences and intelectual traditions. Therefore, the opinions of the authors of such books and entries of human behavior and survival in the concentration camps in Nazi-occupied Europe are very diverse. The Survivors of the Holocaust: General Survey Because the traumatization of the Holocaust was both individual and collective, most individuals made efforts to create a "new family" to replace the nuclear family that had been lost. In order for the victims to resist dehumanization and regression and to find support, the members of such groups shared stories about the past, fantasies of the future and joint prayers as well as poetry and expressions of personal and general human aspirations for hope and love. Imagination was an important means of liberation from the frustrating reality by opening an outlet for the formulation of plans for the distant future, and by spurring to immediate actions. Looking at the history of the Jewish survivors, from the beginning of the Nazi occupation until the liquidation of the ghettos shows that there are common features and simmilar psychophysiological patterns in their responses to the persecutions. The survivors often experienced several phases of psychosocial response, including attempts to actively master the traumatic situation, cohesive affiliative actions with intense emotional links, and finally, passive compliance with the persecutors. These phases must be understood as the development of special mechanisms to cope with the tensions and dangers of the surrounding horrifying reality of the Holocaust. There were many speculations that survivors of the Holocaust suffered from a static concentration camp syndrome. These theories were proved to have not been valid by research that was done immediately after liberation. Clinical and theoretical research focused more on psychopathology than on the question of coping and the development of specific adaptive mechanisms during the Holocaust and after. The descriptions of the survivors' syndrome in the late 1950's and 1960's created a new means of diagnosis in psychology and the behavioral sciences, and has become a model that has since served as a focal concept in examining the results of catastrophic stress situations. After more research was done, it was clear the adaptation and coping mechanisms of the survivors was affected by the aspects of their childhood experiences, developmental histories, family constellations, and emotional family bonds. In the studies and research that were done, there were many questions that were asked of the subjects: What was the duration of the traumatization?, During the Holocaust, was the victim alone or with family and friends?, Was he in a camp or hiding?, Did he use false "Aryan" papers?, Was he a witness to mass murder in the ghetto or the camp?, What were his support systems- family and friends- and what social bonds did he have? These studies showed that the experiences of those who were able to actively resist the oppression, whether in the underground or among the partisans, were different in every way from the experiences of those who were victims in extermination camps. When the survivors integrated back into society after the war, they found it very hard to adjust. It was made difficult by the fact that they often aroused ambivalent feelings of fear, avoidence, guilt, pity and anxiety. The end result justifies any means by which to achieve it including the destruction of the environment as well as the financial gouging of customers and employees. Corporations do have social responsibilities and society should demand corporate adherence to those responsibilities. Employees cannot simply give away company funds to their favorite charity. That would be irresponsible, unethical and illegal. Certainly, company officials are also individuals whose conscience extends past workplace concerns. The person outside the corporation may feel a duty to voluntarily give their time and money to charities, the church, community and family. In these instances, the individual is not acting as the agent of the giving but the principal. They are spending their own time and money or time and not the resources of a company. â€Å"If these are ‘social responsibilities,’ they are the social responsibilities of individuals, not business† (Friedman, 1970). Though the view that business do not have a social responsibility is logical and fits the capitalist ideology on which the country was built, others ar gue that the self-serving goals of corporate America has created a value system not only separate but in opposition to that of society. These gender roles limit what both males and females can and cannot do. Gender roles enslave individuals and force them to be what others want them to be. They are perpetuated and reinforced by the mass media and society in general many ways, some which are obvious and others which are more subtle. In many societies, there is a strong tendency to exaggerate these gender roles, and it seems to frequently jump from a valid observation to a false conclusion. Individuals within the culture are expected to conform to these "norms" and are socialized in manners which constantly reinforce the beliefs and behaviors which are prescribed and presupposed for them. Never pipette by mouth or inhale gases or vapors g. Exercise proper care in heating or mixing chemicals h. Be careful with glass equipment PROCEUDURE Each laboratory experiment must be read and carefully studied before coming to t he laboratory.This must be done to ensure that each student is thoroughly familiar with the principles, procedures, calculations, and anything else with the exercises may be involved. Unless otherwise directed to do so, students should work alone in doing in the laboratory exercises. Take extreme care when using the analytical balances, thermometers, and other items of equipment that are expensive and/or may be easily broken. Language And You Language and You In my opinion, language is certainly the most essential quality human beings have inherited. It is the only way to communicate, and it sure is fascinating how we can convert our thoughts into words. Since language lets us express our feelings, I think learning a second language gives us valuable life skills, as well as, a wider vision of today's world. Undoubtedly the most interesting thing about language is how influential words can be, especially when they are coming from your favorite musician. Since language is our most important, if not the only, means of communication, I think it actually brings people together. Whenever we use language, we are expressing our intelligence through words. It is impressing what the power of words can do; it can break or make a person. Once people realize the power they hold in their hands, they tend to use language to induce the opinions of others. As a result, a single word can affect a person's behavior, as well as, life enormously. I also think mastering a second language gives us priceless life abilities. Being bilingual myself, I think it is an advantage to know a second language because it gives me access to a larger pool of information, and thus a wider area to seek employment and cultural enrichment. Therefore, I think language plays a major role in my life and it also gives me the chance to have a more extensive vision of the world. When contemplating language, I can't leave out the person whose words have inspired me the most. Although he passed away, Tupac Shakur's poems and song lyrics still live in me. His unique way of rapping about real life situations really caught my ear since the first time I heard him. Even though many people thought Tupac's lyrics were dark and inappropriate, I think it was absolutely necessary for a man, who had such a disturbing adolescence, be able to share his problems with the rest of the world. Tupac clearly wrote lyrics that I could relate to in one way or another. I have to admit that he might have said them in an offensive way, but in today's society, people are entitled to say, think, and believe in what they feel strongly about. Finally, I can say many things about language mainly because it is important and it allows us to not only express ourselves clearly, but to influence the way other people think. For this reason, I think knowing a second language enhances the quality of life. Not only do we gain a better understanding of who we are, but we also have a broader access to other cultures. Due to the many experiences I have had with language, I think I have learned to appreciate the fact that I can speak, read, and write. I also have to give credit to my favorite song writer and poet, Tupac Shakur, whose words of wisdom have inspired me and many of today's youth.
